Kwinana

/kwəˈnanə/ (say kwuh'nahnuh)

noun
a town, shire and port in south-western WA, south of Perth; important industrial area.
The Kwinana region is in territory traditionally inhabited by the Wajuk people. It is now a major industrial area, development dating from 1951 when British Petroleum began building an oil refinery there; it has been operating since 1955. In 1954 BHP began development of a steel-bar plant and from 1956 of a steel-rolling mill; a railway carries iron ore from Koolyanobbing, 430 kilometres east of Perth, for refining here. The aluminium refinery, which processes bauxite from the Darling Range, was built from 1961; its first exports were in 1964. A nickel refinery opened in 1970. Kwinana is also the location of a large grain-storage terminal. Industrial pollution in and around Cockburn Sound has caused concern since industrial development began.
